MeshCore off-grid mesh networking
MeshCore is an open-source project for decentralized, multi-hop packet radio networks using LoRa hardware.
Nodes relay messages without central servers — useful for off-grid messaging when internet and cell networks are unavailable.
GARS is exploring existing MeshCore infrastructure in the Port St. Joe area.
North American MeshCore networks typically use the 902–928 MHz ISM band (915 MHz hardware).
Use the USA/Canada preset in the app — currently 910.525 MHz, SF7, 62.5 kHz bandwidth, CR5 — so your node interoperates with the community network.

Operating legally
Rules every ham should know
Amateur radio in the United States is governed by FCC Part 97. This is a practical summary — not legal advice. When in doubt, read the rules.
Licensing
You must hold a valid FCC amateur license (Technician, General, or Extra) and operate within the privileges of your class. Unlicensed individuals may transmit only under direct supervision of a licensed control operator who accepts responsibility.
Station identification
Transmit your assigned call sign in English at the start and end of each contact, and at least every ten minutes during a communication. Identification is required on all amateur bands and modes.
Frequency privileges
Each license class grants access to specific bands and modes. Technicians have VHF/UHF plus limited HF; General adds most HF bands; Extra has full amateur privileges. Consult the ARRL band chart for details.
Power limits
Maximum peak envelope power is generally 1,500 watts on most amateur bands, with lower limits on some VHF/UHF segments. Always use the minimum power needed for reliable communication.
Prohibited communications
No broadcasting, music, obscenity, or retransmission of other services. Business communications are restricted. Encryption intended to obscure meaning is not permitted on amateur bands (exceptions exist for satellite telecommand and certain control links).
Third-party traffic
You may relay messages for others in many situations, including emergencies, but international third-party rules vary by country. During emergencies, normal message restrictions are often relaxed — still identify and log as required.
